Northey Street Organic Markets

Sunday’s now my all time favourite day of the week, that’s because it’s when I get to visit Northey Street Organic Markets. This is where I do my weekly organic shopping and stock up on goodness and medicine I need to help fight the good fight against my breast cancer. For those that don’t know it’s on every week from 0600-1030h. If you want a convenient car park, to beat the heat and the pick of the produce on offer then I suggest you get there as early as possible, the earlier the better.

It’s a 45min drive in for us so as soon as we get up we have our warm lemon water, chlorophyll and green smoothie. Then when we get there we get our second breakfast. Mine today was an organic egg, bacon, onion and spinach spelt roll. We never food shop on an empty stomach, that’s just a recipe for disaster.

We always have a menu plan and shopping list prepared but that needs to be flexible when you eat organic. Reason being that organic means seasonal and not everything’s available all year round like it is in the conventional supermarkets. So if something’s not available you either have to substitute, go without or change your recipe if it’s that important to you. But over the course of last year we’ve now learnt what’s in season and what isn’t so it’s made it much easier to plan ahead for. For example, this week I bought home nectarines and grapes for my daily snacks. Honestly I’m just loving fruits at the moment, always do in summer. They’re all so sweet and juicy. But when you eat seasonally you’re often encouraged to try out different things, things like a dragonfruit. They were there today and although I didn’t buy one I will next week, especially after seeing this recipe for dragonfruit parfait. Who wouldn’t want to try that.

Farmers markets are also my favourite ‘happy place’ where I go to and enjoy my surroundings for no other reason than it feels good, feels right. I hadn’t found that until now since moving to Brisbane. Previously it was the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne. But I have that in Northey Street Organic Markets.

Hi Lia,
I’ve been to the organic markets once years ago with Shelley and Nicole and it was really very enjoyable. Every Sunday I intend to go again but I get home from my long ride and decide to take a little nap. I didn’t get up until 1pm and well and truly missed them. That will teach me lol

I’ve been a farmers market girl for a long time now and always work my schedule around it. You know me it’s organic first, everything else later Liz. ;)

I feel the same about my markets. I’ve been going for at least 5 years to the farmers markets and love connecting with the people that grow the food and seeing their passion for it’s quality. Since we moved I have been blessed with the market being only 5km away. Love it

Agreed! I loved “Central Markets” when we lived in Adelaide. It’s where my passion for markets actually started and why when we returned (the once) it was the first place we visited before checking into our hotel. We just had to have our dinner there. :)
